French Court Holds Monsanto Responsible for Farmer’s Neurological Problems

French Court Holds Monsanto Responsible for Farmer’s Neurological Problems

Lawsuits against Monsanto Company reach new heights as a french court rules that Monsanto’s weedkiller Lasso was liable for a farmer’s weedkiller-caused health problems.

On April 11, 2019 a statement announced by the plaintiffs group ruled in favor of Paul Francois, a farmer who accidentally inhaled Monsanto’s weedkiller Lasso while spraying in 2004. The French appeals court ruled that Bayer’s Monsanto company was liable for causing Francois neurological problems. The court, however, did not dictate compensation for Francois.

Francois accused the infamous weedkiller manufacturer of not providing adequate safety warnings for Lasso. If adequate warning had been provided by Bayer’s Monsanto, Francois could have taken special precautions before spraying Lasso, avoiding his current suffering.

After nearly ten years of battling Monsanto for liability, Francois won rulings against Monsanto in both 2012 and 2015. This was before France’s top court decided to overturn those previous decisions and call for a new hearing. The French appeals court referred the matter of compensation to another court in Lyon that represents workers claiming of health problems caused by exposure to pesticides.

France banned Lasso in 2007 after the weedkiller had been withdrawn in other countries as well. Lasso uses uses a different active ingredient than Monsanto’s Roundup, a glyphosate-based weedkiller that U.S. juries are finding liable of causing Roundup consumer’s non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Like the Roundup lawsuits in the United States, Lasso is subject to similar product liability lawsuits.

Due to the Roundup litigation, Bayer has lost about 30 billion euros from its market value since August 2018.

As time progresses more courts are finding numerous Monsanto Company products to be the cause of innocent consumers’ severe health complications.
